More About dynamike1980

About me:
What can I say? I'm just a guy who loves playing guitar and keyboard, mostly alternative/rock/pop covers from the 80s and 90s. :) (With a little Latin music mixed in too. ;) Played in a few garage bands over the years, usually as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist/keyboard player, but now primarily jamming solo online. ;)

How this all started:
I went through a pretty rough patch near the beginning of the pandemic, and I used my music as therapy to cope with the difficult times and just started recording all the songs I knew on Soundcloud. I'm a native Oregonian, but was living in a tiny apartment in downtown San Francisco at the time. My Mom had just gotten through a tough battle with long COVID and a long hospital stay, and I thought it might cheer her up to hear me play. :) Well, I kept learning and recording more and more songs, and now have over 1,000 on Soundcloud. :) (Link: https://soundcloud.com/michael-vail-180985206)

Thanks for visiting- enjoy the music! :)

Fun Stuff about the Artist

Life on the Street

While living in New York in 2005, played in the subway with friends a couple times for tips, usually beneath 42nd Street / Times Square. Good times! :)

Embarrassing Moment

Michael Stipe of R.E.M. made fun of me in front of the entire crowd during the encore of their show at Bumbershoot in Seattle, in 1999. I had been in the front of the crowd and trying to get their attention all show, but they never heard me. Unfortunately, when Stipe came out alone with just an acoustic guitar, he did. He was struggling to figure out a chord for a song, and he said, "what is that chord, a D?" and I moronically yelled out without thinking, "I HATE D's!!!!!" He said, "what? you hate Ds? How can you hate Ds? This is the land of Ds, so you're at the wrong show, buddy!" The crowd roared in laughter.

My Instrument

My main guitar is a Simon & Patrick steel string, although I also have 12-string and Baby Taylor steel strings, Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul electrics, and an Ibanez bass guitar that I break out for group jam sessions or other special occasions. ;) My main keyboard is a Yamaha PSR-510, and I also have a Korg DW-8000 synthesizer which was gifted to me by a dear friend just prior to his passing.

I've been playing guitar since I was 14, and keyboard since soon after that. My mother was a classical guitar teacher, but we never could get it together for me to take lessons. So while I'm technically self-taught, I guess you could say it was in my blood. ;) Yet I did play the violin in the school orchestra for several years beginning at age 10, and took some musical theory courses over the summer, which helped me immensely.

Favorite bands are R.E.M., New Order/Joy Division, The Clash, Radiohead, Live, Information Society, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and the Psychedelic Furs, among others.
