More About Summer Russell
I was born to a home full of music. As a kid I roamed the mountains of Hawaii, swam in the Pacific every day, wrote poems about the sea creatures I met, and got my first little Casio keyboard in an age of fantastic keyboard riffs on the radio. I started picking out the tunes that would get stuck in my head--"Axel F" was a standout favorite.
In eighth grade, in Austin, I joined the treble choir. One day we were singing Mozart, and when we broke into parts for the first time I stood frozen, rapt, as if the world had just been reborn all around me. And it had.
I started learning to play guitar when I started high school in California. I listened to all the music I could find: I found Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, Simon & Garfunkel. For my 15th birthday I was given a pair of big black boots and a copy of Led Zeppelin IV, and my friend Sarah whispered in my ear: "You're a boot girl now. Your whole life is gonna be different." And it was.

Fun Stuff about the Artist
Life on the Street
I take part in a medieval recreation group called the Society for Creative Anachronism. One night after a long day of fighting, I entertained at a feast of the Barbarian Freehold Alliance. It was Valentine's Day, and while the other singers impressed the crowd with tales of battle, I sang a love song called "The Champion." I was rewarded with first prize in the competition, an armful of loot, and--best of all--the crying faces of a hall full of barbarian warriors.
