More About Mike Nagoda

Hey all, my name is Mike Nagoda and I'm a Disabled LGBT Bluesman from Toronto, Canada. Ever since I was a teenager I wanted to play guitar, but couldn't the regular way due to my disability of Cerebral palsy- it was too painful to form chords. So, I started taking slide guitar and lap steel lessons, but found open tunings very limiting in terms of what I could do.

Then, I heard about this guy who played at a local club here in Toronto. His name was Brian Cober, and he played, I heard, with TWO slides on one hand! I went over to Grossman's Tavern where he played every Sunday Night when I was 19, and saw this guy just playing all these crazy chords and solos! I had found the answer to my problems! From then on, I knew what I wanted to do! Brian invented this art of Double Slide Guitar back in 1971, and we became close friends over the years as he taught and mentored me in this style. He passed away in 2016, and now I'm carrying on the torch with my own style of unique, soulful Blues.
Fun Stuff about the Artist

Life on the Street

There are waaaay too many crazy moments to count, but here's a couple of my favourites!

Story #1: One time I was out busking, and this big burly Russian dude came up to me and asked, "My friend, can you play Another Brick In The Wall by Pink Floyd?". I said sure I can (I'm a huge Floyd fan!) and started playing- then, this guy drags my case into the middle of the side walk, dancing, singing, and by this time a crowd had gathered 'round.

And then this guy starts doing PUSH UPS in the middle of the street while I'm playing and trying to keep it together. You really can't make this stuff up...

Story #2: I was busking after dark at the local Pride festival here in Toronto. It was packed, and I was playing at like 3 AM on Church Street and a whole bunch of crazy stuff happened. The absolute craziest thing was when this very drunken lady came up to me, asked me if I knew any Judas Priest (after hearing me play Delta Blues!)- we sang "Breaking The Law" very loudly together at 3 AM

Embarrassing Moment

My first band was a prog metal band. Once at our school talent show, my lap steel stopped working, and I couldn't get any sound. I sat there for over 5 minutes looking annoyed and horrified as the band played on. Worst moment ever...

My Instrument

My favourite instrument is my mentor Brian's old Telecaster- over 60 years old, cobbled together from a bunch of old parts. Her name is Brownie, and she is my favourite. Brian left her to me after he passed away. I am so blessed to be making music with her, because to me, she is the best guitar in the whole world! Nothing sounds like her, she is unique and so very special!
