In his own words: "CRANK UP THE STEREO AND TEAR OFF THE DIAL! LET'S GO DRIVIN' FOR--What? Yeah, hon', I know I said I'd have dinner ready by six, but I'm in the middle of--Huh? Has she done her homework? Uh, lemme ask...Okay, never mind. Yeah, I'll be right down. [Sh*t]."
There you have it folks! The glamorous life of a 42-year-old stay-at-home rock-star dad!
These days, I mostly play a 1981 Washburn dreadnought. Originally, it was a 40th birthday gift from my mother to my father. As a devoted family man with a demanding job and little time for hobbies, he never really had time to learn how to play.
The guitar eventually went to college with me, though I could hardly play a note either. My closest friend from college was learning the guitar, and he had always admired the Washburn and enjoyed playing it. Several years later, when this friend was in grad school and had to sell his own guitar to pay the bills, I gave him the Washburn as a birthday present.
Again, fast-forward more than a decade. I borrowed the Washburn to perform a song that I had written--at his request--for my dad's 70th birthday. In front of 300 of his closest friends. Despite my nerves--and the fact that I was not an accomplished guitarist--it went over very, very well.
That Christmas the Washburn was re-gifted to me.
The song? It was titled "Pass It On".
