It was a block party that we were performing at and the roads were not blocked off like I thought they were going to be. It had been raining and it was an outside venue........Friends house at a dead end street. And the cover they said we would have was a garage cover so we ended up setting up in the middle of the street. It was really cool because the street was still shiny from the rain earlier that day. We rocked the neighborhood until 11pm that night. The cops came out to tell us to turn the music down. The second time was to just listen to it at the end of the street. The atmosphere of a rainy night, an entire band set up in the street and without permission, it was, I have to say, a U2 moment, when they were performing on the roof tops in New York without permits. The entire neighborhood came out to join us, in what was now called a block party. I have had many gigs since then, all of them very cool, but not as wild as this night. The coolest by far.
Patches Pub Panama City Beach: It was a Wednesday night Open Mic and probably one of the busiest Open Mics I have been too there. It was standing room only. Everyone was in good spirits and having a good time. All the musicians were very talented. It seemed like everyone was in their zone. You know when you are into the music and nothing else around you matters. You are completely zoned. Then my name was called.....I got on stage and performed one of my covers and everything went off without a hitch. My playing technique and vocals were pitch perfect, it was one of those nights where nothing could go wrong. Then I started my second cover song "Another Brick in the Wall" I was right in the middle of my set, just when I was hitting a power vocal the "A" string on my bass breaks. I could not believe what had just happened at this moment. The entire crowd sighed at the same time and then there was laughter. But I believe I handled it well and I never go to a gig without extra strings.
I have 3 basses. The first one is called "What I Need". It is a 4 string Silvertone and it was not the one I originally wanted, but it was the one I needed at that time because the one I wanted was sold before I got there to get her. My second one is called "Jasmine". She is a 5 string Schecter. The look and color of it reminds me of a Jasmine tree growing outside my window when I was a little boy. My third one is called "Toni V". It is a 4 string Schecter. It is named after my brother. My brother passed away from liver cancer last December. Before he passed he told me to keep playing and to never give up. I told him I will and the next bass I get I will name after him. When my brother, Toni Villanueva, passed I collected a lock of his hair to be laminated into the Bass. It will be with me at every gig so he will know I never gave up.
