I am a singer, musician, songwriter and novelist born in New York City in 1946. In July of 1977 my debut album, Christopher Morris Band, was released on MCA Records. The album was hailed by Ken Tucker in Rolling Stone as something new in pop music – fusion – a blend of roots, rock and jazz forms.
I am known for unique voicings and a tonal and rhythmic vocabulary that incorporates diverse musical styles and idioms.The debut album centered on voice, guitar and songwriting. Inspired by the likes of Dinah Washington, Ella, Ray, Willie, Chet, I combine my roots songwriting style with second line grooves and sinewy funk.
My music is very accessible and deeply rooted in American musical idioms. From roots to jazz, it traces my evolution as an American music original. I want to propel my listeners through tonal and rhythmic journeys unlike any others, taking them to where music comes from.
